The Healing Kitchen

Alaena Haber, Sarah Ballantyne

About This Book

Achieving health through nutritious food choices has never been simpler or more delicious thanks to The Healing Kitchen!

Half of Americans take two or more prescription medications—and 20 percent of us take at least five. Given the growing scientific evidence that the Standard American Diet is at least partly to blame for our declining health, there is a clear need for change. It’s time for a dietary shift toward nutrient–dense, anti–inflammatory whole foods that promote health rather than undermine it.

The Healing Kitchen contains more than 175 recipes, every one of which complies with the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol and is free of grains, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades, and refined sugars. Armed with these budget-friendly, quick-and-easy recipes made from everyday ingredients, you can minimize the amount of time and effort you put into preparing healthful food without sacrificing flavor. Straightforward explanations and a comprehensive collection of visual guides will teach you which foods are your best choices for mitigating chronic illnesses, including autoimmune disease. Practical tips on everything from cleaning out your pantry and making easy ingredient swaps to combining flavors and reinventing leftovers will help you go from theory to practice effortlessly. Even better, twelve weekly meal plans with shopping lists will take all the guesswork out of your weekly trips to the grocery store!

The Healing Kitchen is your best tool for turning your kitchen into healing central—all while minimizing your time commitment, keeping your food budget reined in, and enjoying bite after delicious bite of nourishing meals that help you thrive.

Alaena Haber, MS, OTR, makes her cookbook debut with The Healing Kitchen, showcasing her dedication to fresh, nourishing meals in a budget-conscious kitchen. Alaena is no stranger to cooking—she runs the popular blog Grazed and Enthused. She started preparing meals for her family as a child, and many of her techniques and flavor pairings are inspired by the family–style meals that made her Lebanese grandmother, Teta, a legend. Alaena takes a holistic approach to well-being and truly believes that health starts on your plate. She uses a grain-free, anti–inflammatory diet to manage her own chronic illness and wants to bring these healing recipes to your table. Alaena recently received her master’s degree in occupational therapy, which allows her to help people pursue and achieve meaningful lives. Alaena, her husband, and their dog enjoy traveling the country by foot, bike, and kayak.

Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, is the creator of the award-winning online resource The Paleo Mom, cohost of the syndicated top-rated Paleo View podcast, and New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook. She earned her doctorate degree in medical biophysics at the age of twenty-six and spent the next four years doing research on critical care medicine, innate immunity, gene therapy, and cell biology, earning a variety of awards for research excellence. Her transition from academic researcher to stay-at-home mom to internationally recognized health advocate and educator was driven by her own health journey, which included losing 120 pounds and using diet and lifestyle to mitigate a dozen diagnosed health conditions. As a scientist, Sarah is deeply interested in how the foods we eat interact with our gut barrier, immune system, and hormones to influence health, as well as the impact of lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, and activity. Her passion for scientific literacy and her talent for distilling scientific concepts into accessible explanations form the foundation of her work in improving public health.
