Russ Crandall was born and raised in Washington State. After working as a chef in small restaurants for a few years, he joined the US Navy at age 20, and he continues to serve as a Russian and Indonesian translator. In 2010 he began chronicling his cooking adventures on his popular food blog, The Domestic Man (, and continues to post new recipes weekly.

His recipes focus on gourmet, traditional, and international dishes that are inherently healthy. Russ follows the Perfect Health Diet interpretation of Paleo, which recognizes the moderate use of safe starches (including white rice and potatoes) and some forms of dairy as having a place within the Paleo spectrum. He lives with his wife and son in Baltimore, MD.
