Dave Camarillo’s New Book
It has been a long time since I’ve blogged with any regularity and I am excited to start anew with my own Victory Belt blog! In the case that you are a part of that minute population that follows my happenings, whereabouts, and projects (thank you!)-this blog is for you. I will be constantly updating you all on my current book projects, discussing past projects, and focusing on all things BJJ.
For those that have stumbled onto this page, let me introduce myself. My name is Kevin Howell and I am an early 30sish writer (I wrote Saulo’s Jiu-Jitsu University and Galvao’s Drill to Win), poli-sci professor (gives me nerd street cred that I unfortunately do not live up to!), husband, father, friend, and surfer/gamer (finally got 20+ kills on Black Ops)/comic big fan. Oh yeah, I also like to dabble in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and co-own the renowned Fight Zone USA jiu-jitsu academy in Signal Hill, CA. I live with my wife aka designer aka unsung hero of my books aka baby momma, Haley Howell in Huntington Beach, CA, where we like to enjoy all of the above activities and more. That is pretty much me in a nutshell. For the most part (the part that you are almost assuredly most interested in), I spend every day training jiu-jitsu with many of the world’s best and writing jiu-jitsu with, you got it, many of the world’s best. I consider myself incredibly fortunate and I love to share jiu-jitsu with everybody! Now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s head over to the meat of the first blog…
Right now, I am currently finishing Dave Camarillo’s book on building an attacking style of jiu-jitsu. It is incredibly unique and as with all of my projects, I have absolutely no interest in showing you all something that you have seen many times before. How many times do you need to be taught the scissor sweep anyway? The focus of this book is using Dave’s guerrilla tactics (actual warfare tactics I might add) to completely overwhelm your opponent. The book so far is excellent.
As for the writing, it has been a long and arduous process. We have shot about 5 books worth of material (this was actually my first book deal with Victory Belt, so we’ve had plenty of time to collect moves) and I literally have tens of thousands of photos to constantly sift through. I’m including a screen cap of about 1/3 of the techniques that I have cataloged as of today. It is ridiculous! With that said, there are some marvelous techniques in here and I can say with confidence that Dave really shows what he is best at – an uber aggressive attacking jiu-jitsu. Even though we have had so much work to do, the project is starting to look like a book and I will be including screen caps on here shortly for you all to get the first peek!

While I am focusing on Dave, my wife is busy designing Leo Vieira’s guard passing book, which I am also writing. So far, this book is probably the most unique BJJ book ever designed. It focuses on Leo Vieira’s no-gi guard passing and it really captures his forte. Once the design is finished I will also be adding those pics as well.
Well, I look forward to sharing more depth on both projects as they finish up as well as those in the future (Terere!). I hope you all come along for the ride!!!!
Kevin Howell
